This book is not complete. Readers should be warned about this before purchasing it. It's sad that the author has to interrupt a story just to sell another book. An excellent author would never need to rely on this....readers would clamor for the next complete story.

Shattered Dreams Freedom Trilogy Book 1 edition by Brenda Kennedy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Emma and Max had the perfect marriage. With a new baby, Max was ordered to Afghanistan to help his fellow comrades with the war. Then Emma's world came crashing down on her. A widow trying to move on with her life, raising her son alone.
Dr. Alec was raising his daughter alone. Existing from day to day. The only happiness in his life was Raelynn.
Two lonely souls needing companionship.
The storyline was well written and the characters kept you intrigued. A beautiful story of losing loved ones and gaining the strength and courage to move forward with your life.
There is a cliffhanger that will literally blow you away! Can't wait to read the next two books of this series, Broken Lives and Mending a Heart.
I'm volunteering an honest review for a reader's copy.
Just by the title and the synopsis of the book you new "tissues will be a must."

I don't know how to explain my feelings for this book. Ms. Kennedy did such an awesome job in pulling you in and having you love all the characters - Max and his parents, Emma and her parents, Brice, Brook and their kids and all the platoon family. Although, I new it was going to happen. I didn't like getting to know and fall in love with Max and then have him die. Not to mention that was half the book. I don't have any love ones in the military but I could only imagine this hit home for some of the readers. Ms. Kennedy did a great job in incoorporating these feelings.

As you know from the synopsis, she and their child James moves closer to family. Their families help and encourage them in so many ways. Emma takes up a job and meets new people/friends. Not to mention the surprise she gets from her best friend Brooke and her family.

She meets Alec through some friends. He has a daughter name Raelynn. Raelynn and James hit it off through "kung fu". HA! We don't ever really get the story behind Alec's wife. She is dead or did she leave them? Who knows but I figure we will find out later.

Emma and Alec relationship grows slow, very VERY slow. so it came to my surprise when all of a sudden they both LOVE each other. and then bam the book ends with a surprise. I was kinda like What? really.. After all this book and the emotional roller coaster, she is in Love after a few short dates.

So what do I think?

Positive great writing. You got to get inside all the characters head with their POV. The honorable relationship between everyone.

Negative The over and beyond politeness. Thank you and your welcome were the most used words in this story. Although, I am all about morals with thank you, your welcome, yes sir and yes mam... It was over the top. I wish the author could come up with other gratitude words. The book was slow - not the skimming over pages slow - but the kind that could make you a little tired. I felt myself becoming like this but somehow I was drawn back in with another POV. I got a few glimpses of funny and a little banter. Excitement didn't really pick up until about 98%. Yes, the last few pages of the book.

I really have mix feelings.. I really like the book, the writing and style but Dang, if i haven't mentioned this yet (HA!) it was just to darn polite - amongest EVERYONE. You will know what I am talking about when you read this. Yes, there is a cliffy but all the books are out so it is not an issue with me.

Shattered Dreams was just that... It will give you the inside of everyone thoughts on how a perfect dream is shattered. Now that I have read this, I am hoping the next two books will be filled with love, banter, DRAMA, Angst, roughness and less politeness ).

I do recommend but have your tissues. I am going to enjoy this series b/c i am not one to reread a book/series if i have to cry as much as I did in this book.
A forewarning to readers--This book is the 1st in a trilogy series, and is left at the end with a serious cliffhanger, so it prompts you to seek out the second and third book in the series to continue the story and find out what happens in the end. I did think this first book was a good read, and wanted to go on with the story and did acquire the second book and will also purchase the third one. It's abt. a military wife whose husband is called up to serve in Afghanistan. She is left behind with a baby only months old when her husband's whole platoon is activated, and has formed a tight knit "army family" and support system with the other servicemen's wives and families that live on base at Ft. Drum in New York. They all know that there is a very real threat that any, all, or some of them may not come home alive or unharmed. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not your typical "Happy Ending" book, and it prompts you to want to read the next book to find out how Emma deals with the tragedies she's faced with and how things turn out for her and her family, and whether or not she will find happiness again in her life.
UPDATE 3-8-16 Thank you to reviewer Tamie (see replies to this post) - author has updated her description of the book. For the reasons noted in the paragraph below, I have updated my rating to a 4 ☆ review.

Original review
I liked the 1st person, alternating narratives, and I always like when a story honors our nation's heroes. But it was very distracting to be pulled from present tense to past tense and it was ridiculous to have the book end before the story came to a close.

I understand cliffhangers to sell the next book, but this felt more like Friday afternoon's soap opera.

Note to author Be honest with your readers that the book is not going to stand on its own as an independent story and trust that if your work is good enough that the reader will WANT to buy the next story in your series. But readers don't like to be misled.
The book itself was great but I HATE CLIFFHANGERS. The book was very well written and brought tears to my eyes but the cliffhanger was my breaking point.
This book is not complete. Readers should be warned about this before purchasing it. It's sad that the author has to interrupt a story just to sell another book. An excellent author would never need to rely on this....readers would clamor for the next complete story.
